The same day at evening, being the first day of  the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the LORD.

Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.

Dixit ergo eis iterum; pax vobis; sicut misit me Pater, et ego mitto vos; haec eum dixisset, insufflavit, et dixit eis; accipte Spiritum sanctum; quorum remiseritis peccata, remittuntur eis, et quorum retineritis, retenta sunt.

But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the LORD. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

The Priest vested with full vestments and standing before the holy Altar, shall take up the censer and lifting it up shall make the sign of the Cross exclaiming:

Glory be to the Holy, Consubstantial, life-giving and undivided Trinity: always, now and for ever: world without end.

CHOIR: Amen.

And straightway the Priest shall sing the Easter Hymn slowly all the while censing:

Tone 5

Christ is risen from the dead, by death he hath overcome death, and to them in the graves hath he given life.

The hymn is sung a total of 10 times on this wise:

1) Slowly by the Priest.

2) Slowly by the right Choir.

3) Slowly by the left Choir.

Then the Priest shall say aloud the following verses and after each the Choir shall sing the Easter Hymn with a faster tempo. At each verse the Priest shall move around the Altar censing as follows:

In front (west):

PRIEST

Let God arise, and let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him.

CHOIR:  Christ is risen from the dead, by death he hath overcome death, and to them in the graves hath he given life.

To the south

PRIEST

As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: as wax melteth before the fire.

CHOIR:  Christ is risen from the dead, by death he hath overcome death, and to them in the graves hath he given life.

Behind (east)

PRIEST

So shall the sinners perish at the presence of God, but let the righteous rejoice.

CHOIR:  Christ is risen from the dead, by death he hath overcome death, and to them in the graves hath he given life.

To the north

PRIEST

This is the day that the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

CHOIR:  Christ is risen from the dead, by death he hath overcome death, and to them in the graves hath he given life.

At the Prothesis

PRIEST

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

CHOIR:  Christ is risen from the dead, by death he hath overcome death, and to them in the graves hath he given life.

Again in front of the Altar

PRIEST

Now and for ever: world without end. Amen.

CHOIR:  Christ is risen from the dead, by death he hath overcome death, and to them in the graves hath he given life.

PRIEST (Slowly) Beginning from the Altar the Priest will then come out by the Royal Doors and cense the Iconostasis and the people in the usual way.

Christ is risen from the dead, by death he hath overcome death,

CHOIR:  And to them in the graves hath he given life.

DEACON

In peace let us pray unto the Lord.

CHOIR: Kyrie eleison or Lord have mercy. And after each petition

For the peace from on high, and for the salvation of our souls, let us pray unto the Lord.

For the peace and union of the whole world, and for the good estate of the holy churches of God, let us pray unto the Lord.

For this holy temple and for them that enter therein with faith, reverence and fear of God, let us pray unto the Lord.

For our Archbishop [Name], for the honourable order of priesthood, and for the diaconate which is in Christ, for all the clergy and the people, let us pray unto the Lord.

For this city [village, monastery]; for every city and land, and for them that dwell therein with faith, let us pray unto the Lord.

For fair seasons and the abundance of the fruits of the earth, let us pray unto the Lord.

For them that travel by land, by water, by air; for the sick and the suffering, for those in captivity, And for their salvation, let us pray unto the Lord.

That He may deliver us from all tribulation, wrath, danger and necessity, let us pray unto the Lord.

Succour, save, have mercy and preserve us, O God, by Thy grace.

Mindful of our most holy and undefiled, most blessed and glorious Lady, Mother of God and ever-Virgin Mary, and of all the saints, let us commend ourselves and one another, and our whole life to Christ our God.

CHOIR: To Thee, O Lord.

PRIEST

For unto Thee belong all glory, honour and worship, unto the Father, and unto the Son, and unto the Holy Spirit, now and for ever: world without end.

CHOIR: Amen.

At the "Lord I have cried" we sing six verses and  Resurrection Stichera.

Tone 2

Lord, I have cried unto Thee, hear me: hear me, O Lord. Lord, I have cried unto Thee, hear me, give ear to the voice of my prayer, when I cry unto Thee, hear me, O Lord.

Let my prayer be set forth before Thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. Hear me, O Lord.

If Thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with Thee.

Resurrection Stichera. Tone 2.

Come let us worship God the Word, begotten of the Father before all ages, incarnate of the Virgin Mary. For of his own will he endured the Cross and was given over to burial, and having risen from the dead, he saved me, a man gone astray.

For Thy name's sake have I waited for Thee, O Lord; my soul hath waited for Thy word. My soul hath hoped in the Lord.

Christ our Saviour erased the record of sin that was against us by nailing it to the Cross, and abolished the power of death. We worship his resurrection on the third day.

From the morning watch until night, from the morning watch, let Israel hope in the Lord.

With the Archangels, let us hymn the resurrection of Christ, for he is the Deliverer and Saviour of our souls, and he will come again in dread glory and powerful might to judge the world which he fashioned.

For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is plenteous redemption. And He shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Thou who wast crucified and buried, the angel proclaimed as Master, and said to the women: Come and see the place where the Lord lay, for as the Almighty he is risen as he said. Therefore we worship thee who alone art immortal. O Christ, the giver of life, have mercy upon us.

O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.

With thy Cross thou hast abolished the curse of the tree; with thy burial thou hast put to death the power of death; with thy resurrection thou hast enlightened mankind: Therefore we cry unto thee, O Christ our God and benefactor, glory to thee.

For His merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever.

In fear, the gates of death opened before thee, O Lord, and the gatekeepers of Hades crouched with fear when they beheld thee, for thou didst crush the gates of brass and shattered the iron bars, and didst lead us out of darkness and the shadow of death, and didst break our bonds asunder.

Glory be to the Father…

With our mouths let us sing the hymn of our salvation; Come, let us all fall down in the house of the Lord and say: Thou who wast crucified on the tree, and hast risen from the dead, and who art in the bosom of the Father, be merciful upon our sins.

Now and for ever…

With the coming of grace the shadow of the law has passed away, for just as the flaming bush was not consumed, so hast thou, O Virgin, given birth and hast remained a virgin; in place of the pillar of fire hast risen the Sun of righteousness, and instead of Moses is Christ the salvation of our souls.

During the singing of the “Glory… Now and for ever…” the Priest [and Deacon] shall make the Little Entrance with the Holy Gospel.

And he [they] shall pass behind the Altar and go out by the north door. And standing in the customary place the Priest [Deacon] shall say:

Let us pray unto the Lord.

And bowing his [their] head the Priest shall say:

Evening, and morning, and at noon we praise Thee, we bless Thee, we give thanks unto Thee, and we pray unto Thee, O Master of all: let our prayer be set forth before Thee as incense; and incline not our hearts to any evil thing. But keep us from all who would lay a snare for our souls; for our eyes wait upon Thee, O Lord. In Thee, O Lord, is our trust. Confound us not, O God.

For unto Thee belong all glory, honour and worship, unto the Father, and unto the Son, and unto the Holy Spirit, now and for ever: world without end. Amen.

DEACON:  Bless master, the holy entrance.

And the Priest giving the benediction shall say:

Blessed is the entrance into the holiest, always, now and for ever: world without end. Amen.

DEACON: Wisdom. Stand steadfast.

CHOIR

O Gladsome light of the holy glory, of the Immortal Father, heavenly, holy, blessed, Jesus Christ. As we approach the setting of the sun, and see the evening light, we hymn Thee, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, God. Meet it is at all times for Thee to be praised by righteous voices, O Son of God, the Giver of life. Wherefore the world glorifies Thee.

DEACON: The Evening Prokhimenon.

Tone 7

Who is so great a God as our God? Thou only art the God that doest wonders.

Verse:  Thou hast made known Thy strength among the people.

Who is so great a God as our God? Thou only art the God that doest wonders.

Verse:  And I said, Now I have begun: this change is of the right hand of the most High.

Who is so great a God as our God? Thou only art the God that doest wonders.

Verse:  I remembered the works of the Lord.

Who is so great a God as our God? Thou only art the God that doest wonders.

DEACON:

That we may be accounted worthy to hear the Holy Gospel, let us beseech the Lord our God.

CHOIR: Kyrie Eleison (3)

DEACON:

Wisdom. Stand steadfast. Let us hear the Holy Gospel.

PRIEST: Peace unto all.

CHOIR: And unto thy spirit.

PRIEST

The reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St John.

DEACON: Let us give heed.

CHOIR: Glory be to Thee, O Lord, glory be to Thee.

Where there are many Priest and Deacons, the Gospel of the day is read in various languages in three parts.

PRIEST

John 20: 19-25

English

The same day at evening, being the first day of  the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the LORD.

English

Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.

Latin

Dixit ergo eis iterum; pax vobis; sicut misit me Pater, et ego mitto vos; haec eum dixisset, insufflavit, et dixit eis; accipte Spiritum sanctum; quorum remiseritis peccata, remittuntur eis, et quorum retineritis, retenta sunt.

English

But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the LORD. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

CHOIR: Glory be to Thee, O Lord, glory be to Thee.

After the Gospel the Deacon shall say the following petitions:

Let us all say with our whole soul, and with our whole mind, let us say.

CHOIR: Kyrie eleison [3] And after each petition.

O Almighty Lord, God of our fathers, we pray Thee, hear us and have mercy.

Have mercy upon us, O God, after Thy great goodness. We pray Thee, hear us and have mercy.

Again we pray for our Archbishop [Name], and for all our brethren in Christ.

Again we pray for mercy, life, peace, health, salvation, visitation, forgiveness and remission of the sins of the servants of God, [Names] who observe this holy Feast; (and) all the pious Orthodox Christians who dwell or visit this city [town, village, monastery], the parishioners, the Church committee, those who give help and those who have dedicated gifts in this holy temple.

Again we pray for the blessed and ever-memorable founders of this holy Church [monastery] and for all our departed fathers, brethren, and Orthodox Christians everywhere who have fallen asleep.

Again we pray for them that strive and bring forth the fruit of good works in this holy and venerable temple; for them that serve, and them that sing; and for all the people here present who await Thy great and bountiful mercy.

PRIEST

For Thou art a merciful God, and a lover of mankind, and to Thee we ascribe glory, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever: world without end.

READER: Amen.

Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this evening without sin. Blessed art Thou, O Lord God of our fathers, and praised and glorified is Thy name for evermore. Amen.

O Lord, let Thy mercy lighten upon us, as our trust is in Thee. Blessed art Thou, O Lord: teach me Thy statutes. Blessed art Thou, O Master: make me to understand Thy statutes. Blessed art Thou, O Holy One: enlighten me with Thy statutes. O Lord, Thy mercy is for ever: despise not the works of Thine hands. Unto Thee is due praise, unto Thee is due song, unto Thee is due glory, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever: world without end. Amen.

After the prayer, the Deacon continues:

Let us complete our supplication unto the Lord.

CHOIR: Kyrie Eleison

DEACON

Succour, save, have mercy and preserve us O God, by Thy grace.

CHOIR: Kyrie Eleison

DEACON

That this whole evening may be perfect, holy, peaceful and without sin, let us entreat the Lord.

CHOIR: Grant us O Lord. And after each petition.

DEACON

For an angel of peace, faithful guide and guardian of our souls and bodies, let us entreat the Lord.

For pardon and remission of our sins and transgression, let us entreat the Lord.

For things good and profitable to our souls, and peace for the world, let us entreat the Lord.

That we may pass the remainder of our lives in peace and repentance, let us entreat the Lord.

For a Christian ending to our life, painless, without shame and peaceful, and a good defence before the dread judgement seat  of Christ, let us entreat the Lord.

Mindful of our most holy and undefiled, most blessed and glorious Lady, Mother of God and ever-Virgin Mary; and of all the saints; Let us commend ourselves and one another, and our whole life to Christ our God.

CHOIR: To Thee, O Lord.

PRIEST

For Thou, O God, art good and loving-kind, and we ascribe glory to Thee, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever: world without end.

CHOIR: Amen.

PRIEST: Peace unto all.

DEACON: Let us bow down our heads before the Lord.

CHOIR: To Thee, O Lord.

PRIEST

O Lord our God, who bows the heavens and comest down for the salvation of mankind, look upon Thy servants and upon Thine inheritance. For unto Thee, the formidable Judge, who lovest mankind, have Thy servants bowed their heads, and submissively inclined their necks, expecting not help from men, but awaiting for Thy mercy and hoping for Thy salvation which do Thou preserve them at all times, during this present evening and in the approaching night, from every enemy, from all adverse powers of the devil, from vain thoughts and from evil imaginations.

Blessed and glorified is the power of Thy kingdom, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and for ever: world without end.

CHOIR: Amen.

The choir shall then sing the first hymn from the Resurrection Aposticha of Tone 2

Resurrection Aposticha. Tone 2.

Thy Resurrection, O Christ Saviour, hath enlightened the whole world, and hath called back thine own creation. O Almighty Lord, glory to thee.

Then the Paschal verses with the Paschal hymns.

Tone 5

Verse: Let God arise, and let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him.

Today a sacred Pascha has been revealed to us, a Pascha new and holy, a mystical Pascha, a most honourable Pascha, a Pascha that is Christ the redeemer, a blameless Pascha, a great Pascha, a Pascha of the faithful, a Pascha that has opened for us the gates of Paradise, a Pascha that sanctifies all the faithful.

Verse: As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: as wax melteth before the fire.

O come from the sight, ye women bearers of glad tidings, and say unto Sion, receive from us the good tidings of joy, of Christ's Resurrection, rejoice, dance and be glad Jerusalem, for thou hast seen Christ the King, like a bridegroom coming forth from the tomb.

Verse: So shall the sinners perish at the presence of God, but let the righteous rejoice.

When the myrrh-bearing women, at early dawn came to the grave of the Life-giver,   they found an Angel sitting upon the stone, and he addressing them did say: Why do ye seek the living among the dead? Why do ye mourn the incorruptible amidst corruption? Go, proclaim it to his Disciples.

Verse: This is the day that the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

A joyful Pascha, the Pascha of the Lord, the most honourable Pascha has risen upon us, the Pascha in which we embrace one another in joy, Oh Pascha deliverer from sorrow, for Christ today hath shone forth from the tomb as from a bridal chamber and filled the women with joy saying: Proclaim it to the Apostles.

Glory… Now and for ever…

Today is the day of Resurrection, let us be radiant for the festival, and let us embrace one another. Let us say brethren, even to those that hate us: Let us forgive all things on the Resurrection, and thus let us cry aloud:

Christ is risen from the dead, by death he hath overcome death, and to them in the graves hath he given life. (3)

Dismissal:  With the dialogue as follows:

DEACON

Let us pray unto the Lord.
