The Month of April

1. On this day commemoration is made of: Our holy mother

      Mary of Egypt.

Prokhimenon. Tone 8. [Psalm 67]
Verse:
God is wonderful in His saints.
Verse:
Bless ye God in the congregations.

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians.
Galatians 3:23-29, 4:1-5

Brethren, before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Alleluia [3]. Tone 1. [Psalm 39]
Verse:
I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined unto me.
Verse:
He set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

10. On this day commemoration is made of: The Hieromartyr

               Gregory V, Patriarch of Constantinople.

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews.

Hebrews 7:26-8:2

Brethren, such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

23. On this day commemoration is made of: The holy

             Greatmartyr George, the Victory-bearer.

Prokhimenon. Tone 7. [Psalm 63].
Verse:
The righteous shall be glad in the Lord.
Verse:
Hear my voice, O God.

The Reading is from the Acts of the Apostles.

Acts 12:1-11

Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.) And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision. When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him. And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the LORD hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

Alleluia [3]. Tone 2 [Psalm 91].
Verse:
The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow

           like a cedar in Lebanon.
Verse:
Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish

in the courts of our God.

25. On this day commemoration is made of: The holy Apostle

            and Evangelist Mark.

Prokhimenon. Tone 8. [Psalm 18].

Verse: His voice is gone out into all the earth.

Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God.

The reading is from the First General Epistle of St. Peter.
1 Peter 5:6-14

Brethren, Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand. The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son. Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Alleluia [3].  Tone 1 [Psalm 88].

Verse: The heavens shall declare Thy wonders, O Lord.

Verse: God is glorified in the assembly of the saints.

29. On this day commemoration is made of: The holy Apostles

             Jason and Sosipater.

The reading is from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
1 Corinthians 4:9-16

Brethren, God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised. Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace; And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it: Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day. I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you. For though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.

30. On this day commemoration is made of: The holy Apostle

James, the brother of John the Theologian.
