Question 534

Good morning Father. I have noticed that the book of the gospels and the menaia in Church present scripture in a preselected manner in a different chronology yet the scriptures themselves exist in other texts (old testament, new testament etc). I understand that the Church has selected scriptural readings to coincide with the church calendar and the paschalion, but when was liturgical scripture organised in this way?

Answer to Question 534

Good morning Father, I think we both need a good study on ecclesiastical Liturgical practices. All I know is that the form of liturgical practice as we have it today begun to take shape from the 4th century with certain feasts being added to the ecclesiastical calendar and by the 7th century St. John Damascene had composed the Octoechos. The readings from the Gospel and Apostle must have been selected around this period. Sorry I can't be of more help. I'm getting old and don't have the energy for studying, but you're still young, maybe you can do a study on the subject and share your findings
